Healing and Injury Management

20 Hour Module for teachers and students of Asana

As yoga teachers we are sought-after healers and our students will come to us when they are in pain. We can help our students to make appropriate adjustments to protect and/or strengthen weaker or vulnerable places in their bodies. In doing so, we can play an important role in their healing.

As practitioners, we can learn to use our yoga practice as a tool for self healing and educate ourselves on how our bodies work and gain tools to heal from injury and discomfort.

This 20 hour course is for teachers and practitioners who want to increase their knowledge of asana, anatomy, and the nervous system as a tool for healing. This is specifically designed for yogis looking to understand alignment in the postures, how to work with props, and develop a practice that caters to your own individual needs. This is also for  yoga teachers looking to improve their knowledge of how to read bodies and meet student’s unique needs.

Each day will open up with a focused workshop style practice reviewing the platforms of the body and how we can align our bones so our muscles work in an optimal way. A discussion on anatomy and common injuries will follow, learn how to use props, specific alignment cues, and sequence postures in a way that heals and creates sustainability in your yoga practice and life.

Friday, November 07th — 13:00 to 18:00
The feet and legs help to protect our lower back and provide foundation. When our foundation is off, it can cause misalignments throughout the body causing pain and injury.Learn to align the bones of your body and connect to your center known as your plumbline. We will also look at the surrounding muscles and learn how to stabilize vulnerable joints such as the sacrio-illiac joint and lumbar spine.

A discussion on injury management will follow and gain an understanding on what causes injury and how we can develop a yoga practice to heal. We will review the anatomy that supports the lower half of our body and wind down with a deep psoas release.

Saturday, November 08th — 09:00 to 12:00
We will open the day with an asana based practice to help support our neck and shoulders. Healthy shoulders make for better inversions and add more longevity to your practice. With the multiple downward dogs and chaturangas of your daily vinyasa practice, your shoulders can be vulnerable to injury over time. Work with props and alignment cues to better understand how to stabilize your shoulders. Learn to mobilize your upper back and support your neck and gain freedom in these vulnerable places. . The practice will include inversions and we will work with props and a wall space to help you feel supported. Inversions can help build strength in the shoulder girdle and align the upper back to support the neck helping you feel more connected to your center.

Saturday, November 08th — 13:30 to 17:00
The afternoon will include the anatomy of the shoulders and neck and learn to remedy  discomfort in this region. Knowledge heals and we will look at common misalignments in this region and gain tools to keep your shoulders and neck healthy.

We will also explore what it means to work from your core and the deep muscles that make up this potent area. We will end the day with a long pranayama practice to wind down and soothe any edges.

Sunday, November 09th — 09:00 to 12:00
Open the day with a three hour practice focused on balancing your spinal curves through twists and backbends. These postures can transform the way we feel in our bodies and can be very therapeutic for the spine when practiced in a methodical way. Having an understanding of how to balance the spinal curves as you move through space can be deeply healing to your entire system. The spine houses the central nervous system, which is the main operating system for our entire body.  We will spend time on backbends that strengthen and support our posture and end this practice with specific pranayamas designed to raise  prana along what yogis call the sushumna nadi, helping you to feel transformed.

Sunday, November 09th — 13:30 to 17:00
The afternoon will include unpacking the nervous system and understanding the importance of inducing the healing state known as the rest and digest. The vagus nerve is activated in our yoga practice through specific postures and breathing techniques and you will learn more about this wandering nerve. Restoratives help us to relax and can bring the body back to a deep sense of balance where we can begin to replenish and heal. We will wind down with a soothing and quieting practice to end the weekend.
